South Australia has one of the most comprehensive skilled migration programs. To qualify for state nomination, you must meet the following requirements.
Skilled migrant visas
The Australian government has several visas available to skilled workers. These include the Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 and the Skilled Nominated visa subclass 190. Applicants who meet the criteria for these visas can apply through the SkillSelect system. Applicants are required to complete the basic requirements of the Australian General Skilled Migration program, including age and English language proficiency.
Applicants must also meet the minimum work experience requirement listed for their occupation on the Skilled Occupation List. Generally, this is 20 hours per week or 40 per fortnight of paid employment in their nominated occupation. Applicants may also be able to gain points for having completed a professional year in their nominated occupation or a closely related one.
The GSM program offers several pathways or streams to gaining permanent residency in South Australia. The state government has set aside 2,300 nomination places for the 2023-24 program. It will select both Australian-based applicants and those living overseas who lodge an expression of interest on the SkillSelect portal. The program also seeks to support regional businesses and address labour shortages.
Permanent residency
The South Australian Government is seeking skilled workers to fill several occupation shortages. These include high-demand skills in regional areas and specialised expertise in digital and critical technology. It is also seeking to retain its international graduates and temporary visa holders. These professionals will be invited to apply for state nomination through an Expression of Interest submitted in SkillSelect.
According to the state’s official portal, the new process was introduced after substantially reducing the GSM programme’s visa nomination allocations. The GSM program will now prioritise retention of the state’s international graduates and temporary visa holders, as well as priority to those with highly specialised skills.
Business visas
South Australia has several business visa options for skilled migrants wanting to settle there. These visas are points-tested and require an EOI to be submitted. The Department of Home Affairs will invite successful applicants to lodge a 491 visa application.
The Skilled Work Regional 491 visa is a state-nominated provisional visa that allows points-tested skilled workers and their families to live and work in regional Australia. The program offers four visa streams. The Investor stream is for people who have a significant amount of money to invest in the state. The Entrepreneur stream is for those who can develop a new or existing business in the country. The Outer regional stream offers concessions to work experience requirements for those currently living and working in South Australia. This option is not available to offshore applicants.
